Grant Funded Programs
Pre-service Teacher Preparation Programs:
MaST Academy
UTEP’s Math and Science Teacher (MaST) Academy, funded by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), was established in January, 2007, to enhance the scope and quality of secondary mathematics and science teachers that graduate from UTEP to serve students in schools across the El Paso region.
SABE MAS
The SABE MAS Academy is a College of Science program designed to strengthen STEM content knowledge and pedagogy in El Paso area pre- and in-service teachers. SABE MAS undergraduates interact every other week with experienced teacher participants in a three hour block as a community of learners to collaborate on cross-disciplinary lesson plans supported by technology, aligned to TEKS, and informed by the teachers' needs. Undergraduates benefit from in-service teachers’ knowledge and experience.
In-service Teacher Programs:
SABE MAS
In-service area math and science teachers come together with undergraduates to learn the latest techniques and pedagogy from University professors in the areas of math and science. The in-service teachers then work with the undergraduate participants to create lesson plans for use in current and future STEM classrooms.
IPY-ROAM
IPY-ROAM is the "International Polar Year - Research and Educational Opportunities in Antarctica for Minorities" program hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2009 is an intense, internationally coordinated scientific campaign that is focused on increasing understanding of the polar regions and stimulating a new era in polar science.
Building Physics Teacher Quality through Synergetic Activities
A partnership between El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was developed to create a series of professional development initiatives to improve the quality of physics teachers in the El Paso region. Increasing the teachers’ content pedagogy in the area of physics was seen as a necessary step toward better academic preparation of students (grades 6-12) and their enhanced performance on the standardized tests.
Through the Physics Teacher Quality Program, funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, an integrated professional development program with a sequence of courses, institutes, and workshops has been established for about 20 middle and high school in-service physics teachers per year.
